Black Hill and Hunter Valley Sets Danced at Workshop in Wakefield

Dancers from all over New England gathered recently in Wakefield, Massachusetts, and learned the Black Hill Set and started on the new and award-winning Hunter Valley Set at a workshop with Irish dance master Pat Murphy on his recent visit to Boston in conjunction with the Enjoy Travel group. See related post.  Pat delighted the large number of Irish set dancers in attendance with his usual excellent teaching style, making the sets seem familiar before we ever even danced them.

Set Dancing at the Boston Irish Festival – The Kilfenora

Video of Boston area Irish Set Dancers dancing the sixth figure of The Kilfenora Set

The Boston Comhaltas musicians played lively tunes for Irish set dancers at the 2013 Boston Irish Festival in Canton on the grounds of the Irish Cultural Centre of New England. This is The Kilfenora Set – sixth figure, the hornpipe. It was great to see some beginner set dancers give it a try and to re-connect with set dancers from various groups and regions.

So, okay, some of the dancers were confused, but part of the fun of set dancing is helping others learn the dances. And nobody worries if you mess up; it’s not a competition. Here’s how it goes in a video of the Kilfenora Set Figure 6 with instructions published by Mike Didkovsky. What a find! You can dance along to the calling notes right in the video.

Short Notes for the 6th Figure of the Kilfenora

*AR: Advance & Retire (2 = 2 times or 8 bars; 1 =1 time or 4 bars)

**Kerry Body (aka Quarter-House): “keep waltz hold, couples dance 1 step into the set and 1 step back to place then turn 2 steps on to the next place on their R (4 bars). They repeat this movement into each place and back home” (excerpt from Set Dancing News study notes). Or, “in-2-3 stomp; out-2-3 and turn-2-3 and into place.”

*** Pinwheel: “ladies take R hands in the centre and wheel around to fall in beside the gent to the R of their starting position (4 bars)” (excerpt from Set Dancing News study notes). Or, “ladies right-hand star; count the gents and stop at the 3rd gent (not counting your starting position).”

Padraig McEneany Set Dancing Workshop at Harrington’s

Workshop June 29, 2011 at Harrington’s in Wakefield

The Harrington’s Irish Set Dancers were very fortunate to have Padraig McEneany stop by while on a summer holiday in The States to give a workshop to local Boston area dancers. Padraig is a world-renowned Irish Set Dance Master from Ireland (Termonfeckin in County Louth).

Encounter in Dublin

While a few of us were visiting in Dublin the prior February to attend The Gathering Festival in Killarney, we sought out O’Shea’s Merchant Pub in the Temple Bar area in hopes of finding set dancing in the pub. We found our way to the back room and to our amazement, we were able to join in a set dancing class with Padraig McEneany. We, of course, invited him to our little dance group in Wakefield (MA), should he be in the area any time. We were delighted that he showed and interest and we eventually worked out his visit to Harrington’s in the Boston area.

About Padraig

Padraig is familiar to America set dancers who have been to the Connie Ryan Memorial Weekend in Cape May and Rehoboth in Maryland (held in November) and from prior CCE (Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann) conventions in Parsippany, New Jersey  (held in April) sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Region. He has produced instructional DVDs with his group Faoi Do Chois (On your feet) and The Full Set (2) helping to make set dancing easy to learn as well as fun.  Michael Harrison has written an excellent review of the dance DVD called “Faoi Do Chois” on Dragons Eye with purchasing information.

The Boyne Set – What we Learned

The dancers filled the modest hall and before long, Padraig had everyone dancing The Boyne Set, which was new to us. We struggled with “the figure” – the complicated figure eight and basket in Figure 2, but each group got it right at least once. This is The Boyne Set – Figure 2 (video):
